In this activity, the percent of hypochlorite ion, ClO-, in a solution of commercial bleach will be determined by performing an oxidation-reduction titration with sodium thiosulfate. The amount of thiosulfate ions added during the titration is directly proportional to the amount of hypochlorite ions present in the bleach sample. The mole ratios will be used to calculate the molarity of the bleach; and then by using the density of commercial bleach, the percent of hypochlorite ion in the bleach will be calculated. The kit comes with enough materials for 15 setups.
