When dissolved in water, acids dissociate to varying degrees. Strong acids quickly give up their protons, while weak acids dissociate only slightly. Therefore, the degree of dissociation, which indicates the strength of the acid can help in the identification of an acid. In this investigation, students determine the equilibrium constant of three unknown acids and compare the data to known values to identify them. The kit comes with enough materials for 15 setups. A pH meter, required, is available separately.
