Demonstrate Chemical Reactions in BatteriesElectrochemistry, the conversion of electrical energy into chemical energy or vice versa, and Faraday’s laws, which involve electrolysis in an electrochemical cell, are both covered in this lab activity. Students build an electrolysis cell and a battery, determine the chemical reactions occurring in each cell, and vary different conditions to see how they affect cell performance. The experiments can be conducted in 90 minutes and the kit comes with enough materials for 15 setups. A voltmeter or 1.5 V flashlight bulb, 9 V battery, and wires with alligator clips, required, are all available separately. Chemical contents: bromothymol blue indicator ssolution, copper, copper sulfate solution, sodium sulfate, zinc, and zinc sulfate solution.
