Bring your students to the brink of a nanotechnology breakthrough by visually demonstrating the concepts of molecular self-assembly. This kit transforms a complex concept into concrete, easily understood outcomes. A gold-coated substrate is provided to place a self-assembling thiol atop of with a pen or stamp. The thiol is allowed to stabilize for about one minute and then is visualized by pouring isopropyl alcohol over the surface. The alcohol sheets off where there is thiol present, but beads up microscopically where it is not. Everything necessary to demonstrate self-assembly, the critical element in the formation of complex molecules and multi-celled life forms, is present. An accompanying teacher’s guide includes discussion questions and a multi-media presentation.
