Packard’s Acceleration Apparatus

This unique apparatus gives each student the ability to study the laws of acceleration quantitatively without additional tools. The path traced on the graph paper by the falling ball provides all the data the student needs. The student first clips graph paper, under an upside down sheet of carbon paper, to the 36 x 32cm aluminum plate, and then gently propels a ball with uniform velocity from a shelf at the upper left across the sloping board allowing it to drop under the force of gravity. The ball leaves a track across the graph paper in which the horizontal motion is considered uniform and the vertical motion accelerated. Careful reading of the trace provides all the data needed to determine the acceleration. The board includes a spirit level, adjustable legs, stops for catching the ball, 12 sheets of graph paper, two sheets of carbon paper, a 25mm steel ball and complete instructions.
