Heat, a catalyst, the concentration of the solution and the surface area of the solution—all of these factors affect how quickly a chemical reaction takes place. Students use the different neutralization reactions and acid-base indicators to observe the differences in reaction time, indicated by vivid color changes. The lab unit provided includes information and activity sheets, four lab exercises, crossword puzzle, test and answer key. Materials for 30 students working in pairs; the experiment can be performed twice. Kit includes one bottle each of sodium hydroxide, phenolphthalein solution, aspirin, Alka Seltzer®, universal indicator solution and starch, two bottles bromothymol blue, three bottles of hydrochloric acid #1 and #2, potassium iodide solution, potassium persulfate solution, 13 dropper/pipets, two droppers and one package of copper wire.
