Ideal for demonstrating the elasticity of gases. A measured quantity of gas is enclosed in a graduated, airtight piston which is mounted on a wooden base and platform. Simple mechanical pressure, in the form of weights placed on the platform, is used to change the volume of gas. Students then plot the volume of gas vs. pressure to obtain a good approximation of Boyle’s Law. The apparatus also can be used to demonstrate the expansion of a heated gas (Charles’ Law).
