In this experiment, students learn about the molecular biology and pathogenesis of AIDS. Because Western Blots are used as the secondary test for the presence of HIV, the techniques practiced in this kit give students insight to the characteristsics of HIV. Students are given hypothetical samples from patients who have tested positive for HIV by ELISA. Protein samples are separated by horizontal agarose gel electrophoresis, transferred to a membrane, and detected by staining. This experiment does not require an electrotransfer apparatus. No human serum is used in this experiment. Some components require 4°C refrigerator storage. Materials for six blots are included. Requires horizontal gel electrophoresis apparatus, power supply, micropipets, shaker platform, and incubation oven, all available separately.
