A number of metallic salts exhibit the thermochromic effect in which a compound changes color as temperature changes. Reacting a mercury salt with I- ions can form a complex ion, which can further be reacted with other metal ions to form compounds that undergo complete color change when heated and then return to their initial color when cooled. This experiment can be completed in 45 minutes and comes with enough materials for 15 setups.
