Simple and quick to perform, this lab activity uses thin-layer chromatography, an analytical tool that separates mixtures of similar molecules based on solubility and adsorption, to separate a mixture of dyes. Students first determine which solvent mixture best separates the various dyes and then determines the Rf for each dye. Once an optimum procedure has been determined, they identify the dyes in an unknown mixture, much like the procedures used by analytical and forensic chemists. Includes enough materials provided for 15 lab groups.
