(EDVO-kit 222)
Brighten up your lab with this one! Here students will transform E. coli with the green (gfp) or blue (bfp) fluorescent protein containing plasmids. The two genes, which were originally isolated and cloned from marine orgainsms, were mutated to produce enhanced fluorescence. In this experiment, transformed cells are selected based on antibiotic resistance encoded in the plasmid used for transformation. When exposed to long wave UV light (black light), these proteins are sure to glow. Materials provided for ten groups. Includes instructions. Required, but not included: water baths (to set at 37 and 42ÁC), incubator/oven, bunsen burner, hot plate or microwave oven, black light, automatic micropipet to deliver 25 {mu lower case}l, pipet pumps or bulbs, hot gloves, ice.
